breathing in mountains

I think it's great that your daughter is traveling. I only saw the Alps from a plane, but they looked amazing. I live in Colorado and frequently hike in the mountains. At 7000ft you do start to get out of breath a bit easier but I've done two 14ers (mountains that are above 14,000 ft) and I was fine. I think it's different for everyone. Depends on how much exercise you have normally, what your normal lung function is, etc. I recommend taking Tylenol or something similar before hand (in case of headache) and drink lots of water! Always have water with you and tell her not to feel bad if she needs to take it slow!

It might be worth discussing with the doctors. I'm 59 with CF (FEV!%-31) and have travelled a number of times to high altitude with no problems (even to Switzerland). The last time, however, I went to Yellowstone for a week and it had been over 10 years since I had been at high altitudes (currently live in Texas below 1000') and experienced some problems. I had a noticeable shortness of breath, loss of apetitie and generally felt bad after the 1st day. My doctor was a little upset that I didn't mention I was going to the mountains and felt I should have been on O2. You might want to a least discuss this and I'm not really sure how they perform the test to determine if you might encounter a problem but I have just decided that vacations are really nice at the beach.
