32 y.o. male - only diagnosed with CF after experiencing infertility

Hi Megan. i have a son with CF and we going to do IVF/PGD to have our second. we have met with the fertility clinic and talked withe the doc and pretty much got the procedure from him. we also did a lot of info research on it also so we went in pretty aware. how was it for you? im really interested in the details from someone who has done it. want to know what to expect. did you get pregnant on the first implantation? and did you see that post from another woman who did the PGD also and still ended up with a child w/ CF. i couldnt believe that when i read it. shocked! hope we can talk if you want to PM me that would be fine

Hi Megan,

My husband was diagnosed at 18 mos with Cf, so he doesn't fit that "no symptoms" criteria that your DH does. But we did IVF with a NON surgical sperm aspiration last year in February and now have 6 month old triplets. If your DH wants to know any aspects of the sperm retrieval of IVF with ICSI, my DH has had a needle biopsy and a "cut-him-open" (as he calls it) testicular biopsy.

Amy- Adoption is a fabulous option (we know, we looked into it...) HOWEVER it is unbelievably expensive so it really is not an option for some people. Our IVF was covered with insurance so it was MUCH cheaper than adoption. Yes, we looked into adopting older kids however we both work full time and cannot take as much time off as we think an older child might need to adjust. So adoption sounds great and all but the reality is we don't have $30,000 and time off to travel to get children and take off work at a moment's notice..Adoption was much more complicated and unattainable for us than IVF was.

Elizabeth- I willl send you the info and how we went through it. I went through 3 cycles of IVF. And yes, I did read about the woman who had a mistake. We know that going into it but we felt we did everything medically possible to give a child a healthy life. So it is in someone else's hands now..I will PM later. Aidan is waking..

Wow, thanks for all the wonderful replies! We're still reeling a bit, but it's good to find other folks who've dealt with CF and infertility. We know absolutely no one (friends or family) who've dealt with either.

Our insurance doesn't cover IVF. My husband and I are both aware of the risks an costs involved in both IVF and adoption, and we're looking into both (as well as weighing whether or not to even have any more children). Unforuntately, cost will be an issue - I've already committed to quitting my nicely salaried teaching job in June to pursue my doctorate. (Figures, eh?)

It is possible to have two mutations of the CF gene and not have CF if they are on the same strand, but being a carrier could cause infertility. Have u made an appointment with a CF accredited facility. I would first see and deal with CF and hold off on the baby issue until u get more info and deal with a CF diagnoisis.

There is a program on www.inciid.org that is called "from the Heart" and is an IVF scholarship. Their scholarship program/application is extensive, but WELL worth it if you are a selectee. The only thing it wouldn't cover is the sperm retrieval, and that (at least in our case) was $500 for anesthesia plus $600 for the retrieval.

We were selected as "from the heart" recipients, but were already pregnant at the time so were no longer elgible for the program. I can give you more specific information if you are interested. I can vouch for the legitimacy of the program though!
