Anti histamines are just fine to take, as long as you take the ones that don't have anti-cholinergic affects. This takes Zyrtec and Benedryl out of the picture.
Zyrtec and Allegra have equal efficacy as shown in 2 head to head studies in patients with severe allergies. But Allegra doens't have anti-cholinergic affects.
Head to head studies of Zyrtec vs. Claritin (aka Alavert) and Allegra (fexofenadine or Telfast for our overseas friends) vs. Claritin (aka Alavert) show that both Zyrtec and Allegra work significantly better than Claritin (aka Alavert/loratadine or Clarinex desloratadine).
So efficacy wise, throw Claritin out because it's not up to par efficacy wise.
Allegra is the clear choice.
