Vitamin D and tanning beds

See the thing is I've been reading some medical publications that say vit D supplimentation does not work so well. That the only real way to get vit D is by UV (sun).

What I'm talking about is a few minutes of tanning bed.. not enough to burn. What would be the difference between this "UV lamp" and a tanning bed?

I think what cowtown is refering to are "lightboxes" that are specifically designed to yield therapeutic results. One of my doctors suggested that I get one at one point, but due to expense I opted for regular walks in direct sunlight.

These lightboxes put out a certain amount of lumens and flux that are deemed to be therapeutic. Mostly this is for treating depression, but since there's a strong link between improved mood and a decrease in inflammation in the body, I think it would stand to reason that this product, although not directly used to stimulate vitamin D production, could have secondary effects that do just that.

The product I was interested in getting is one that some people use to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD.) Sun-a-Lux is the company I looked into, but their product was nearly $500.

Remember, UV doesn't GIVE us vitamin D, but it helps us synthesize it. Slight difference.

Also, I've read that you can get toxic levels of vitamin D with supplimentation if you aren't careful. If you get it though sunlight/UV you're skin will not allow you to get toxic levels.

The odds of a CFer having toxic vitamin levels is pretty low. It's almost always better to get your vitamins from food sources than from supplements. Make sure you have a diet rich in dairy, if you can tolerate it.
