Salt water pools are now at some swim clubs! My son takes swimming lessons in an indoor salt water pool. It's great!

Erin,

My doctor says that chrlorine is a poison for respiratory patients and suggests what mneville suggested -- swimming in a salt water pool. A good part of her practice is recognizing how chemical exposures causes inflammation and all kinds of ailments. Particularly bad for lungs, but other things as well. When people remove all kinds of chemicals, symptoms start to lessen. I can tell you this has been true for me in a very drastic way. And since you are having symptoms after Chlorine exposure, you know this already.

Whenever I tell my that something doesn't bother me she says that many things aren't readily apparent. Some exposures have a delayed reaction, so you may not make the connection. The othr point is if you are getting exacerbations or your lung function is going down, it is impossible to say that something is not affecting you. I was one of those people who had a late diagnosis, and realized years later that what triggered CF to manifest itself when it did, was a one year exposure to Formaldehyde. I have also read on this site about other people who first got sick after a move to a new place, or exposure to fire, or some other environmental trigger.

I am sure you were hoping against hope that Chlorine would not be bad for you, but I'm afraid it is.

I don't mean to change the intent of this thread but was wondering while you are on the topic of pools...if they were healthy places to be with cf.I realize the exercise potential is great but I recall my pediatrician (when I was young) calling public pools "cesspools of infection". I didn't know whether this was one Doctors opinion or the consensus??
