Richard, we have an "Over 40's Club" which has members from 40-59! Take heart, have your friend come here and find out that there is so much he can do to help his health. Everyone is very proactive here...and we are a great community/family.

Richard,

I know it's terrifying to be on that side of the conversation. I've sort of been there...but I was the potential girlfriend at the time. I swear, I didn't sleep for three days!

My best advice, though, is to become as educated as you can, but don't get hung up on the statistics. They are averages that include people with CF who died in infancy to people who died quite late in life, and so it doesn't really give a good indication of how long your friend might live. There's no easy way to get over the sadness and worry, but as there's nothing you can do about it, try not to dwell on it.

Richard,

After almost 2 years of suspicion, it has now become offical that my 20 y.o. son has CF.
I too was in shock when I first started reading about CF.
I keep saying to myself thou: medicine has come such a long way, new breakthroughs happen everyday , in a couple years maybe a very effective therapy will be available or even a CURE!
Just think how the "salty babies" died within just months!
This forum has taught me the importance of prevention! I'm so thankful I found it! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Tell your friend to come here, to learn how to put up a good fight against CF. That will make a world of difference!!!

Richard:

I was diagnosed with CF when I was about 27 and they didn't think I would live to be 30. In November I'll be 60 so I hope that helps give a little insight into how predicatable this silly disease is. I really hope to see them come up with something that cures this disease or prevents it from getting worse in my lifetime so I can just feel good to know that the "younger" people get a fighting chance. I really believe it will happen someday.

Don't give up on supporting your friend and others with CF. The support is what keeps us going!

Take care.
