Hi,

Has anyone been on a low dose of prednisone long term? Are there are levels considered safe to be on for long periods of time?

I am the mother of a four year old boy with CF, I don't have CF but I took prednisone for a digestive disease. I was off and on it for about ten years--My highest dose was 60mg every day. It did wonders for controlling inflammation in my digestive tract, however the side effects were miserable. My face swelled up, I got stretch marks from the rapid water weight gain, I had insomnia, mood swings, migraines, etc... The long term side effects are still bothering me, even though I stopped taking the medicine over ten years ago. I am 27 and have the bone density of a woman in her 60's, I have glaucoma, high-blood pressure, my gallbladder was removed because of gallstones, My periods are very irregular. THese are all some of thr potential long term effects of prednisone that will continue to plague me. I am not a doctor and so I can't advise you not to take prednisone, but you should definitly be aware of the risks.

I would add insulin dependence and cataracts to my list of effects from low dose/long term prednisone usage. Which, for me, was aprox 10 years at 10-20 mgs a day. I would also add, that for me, the benefits at the time fully outweighed the side effects. And after finally reducing my usage to nil, the insulin dependence ceased. And after having cataract surgery last winter, my vision has been corrected to 20/20. Good times.

It took me a long time to wean myself off of prednisone (I am the second poster). We would reduce my dose every two weeks a little bit at a time. (60mg a day, then 50mg a day for two weeks, 45mg the next two weeks, etc...) the lowest dose was 2mg every other day. It is very important to taper off prednisone and not stop it suddenly, the stress on your kidneys can seriously harm or kill you!!! Your Dr. will know how fast you can taper off the medication and the safe dosage to do this. The most important thing is to heal your body and control the inflammation; prednisone is excellent at doing this despite the long and short-term effects.
I have crohn's disease and used prednisone to reduce inflammation and contol flare-ups. My son has CF and has never taken prednisone. He does use flovent to control respiratory inflammation, I am just curious to know why one would taken oral prednisone for CF. Does it work better than inhaling something, does flovent become ineffective over time. will my son need it later on?
Thanks

I would echo the previous poster, regarding the need to wean off properly with the consult of your doctor. I believe that I reduced my dosage by cutting the daily dose 2.5 mgs, a week at a time. Generally, it is used to control inflamation directly related to infection. In short bursts, it can be very effective at allowing antibiotics to have a better efficacy.

Also, for post-tx patients, it is used chronically. Perhaps someone who is post-tx could chime in with prednisone related info.
