port incision

hey guys!

So my port was accessed pretty much immediately after it was placed (about 3 wks ago) and has been since (and will continue to be for a VERY long time). The incision, therefore, has been covered since it was created. I'm wondering if it would heal faster if my port hadn't been accessed right away, if some air could get to it? It's been covered since day one. It's healing just fine, it's pretty itchy right now (still scabby) which I know is good, but I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to put that mederma stuff on it (or even neosporin, just to soothe it from the constant covering)? That mederma stuff supposedly diminishes scars and I was always under the impression that in order for it to actually do what it says, you have to use it in a reasonable amount of time of the wound. However, because my port is continually being accessed, things have to be super sterile and I imagine a glob of mederma or neosporin next to the access site would prevent that from happening...or could I do it carefully and be just fine? Has anyone tried this or used something like this for this very reason on a newly accessed port incision? Any suggestions (other than to just leave it alone, haha)?

Just wondering, any input is appreciated. Thanks!

my port was accessed for the 3 weeks immediately following the placement in IR. i never thought about using maderma until i'd had it for about 2 months and i was no longer using it for abx for the time being. the only thing with maderma is that you have to apply it like 3-5 times a day on "fresh" scars for several months. it's a pretty long process so i gave up and my scar isn't bad...it's the same color as my skin now and you can hardly see it. i wouldn't think that while your port is accessed that using maderma would be a realistic possibility because of the dressing, risk of infection, etc.

i'm not sure about putting some neosporin under the dressing. i would ask the nurse the next time they change the dressing or call your home health company if you're the one changing it at home.

My incisions was covered for about three weeks a short time after being placed and it healed just fine. I never used any kind of scar treatment and I can barely even see my scar now.

I never used and anything either, mind was in use immediately as well oover the years it just faded by itself. I don't thing you shd use any creams on it. But that is jsut my oponion. It will get lighter for sure. PAt/55-CF

Hi there,

I did use mederma for my port incision, though probably not as frequently as directed. My port wasn't accessed (for IV abx) right away, and I did use neosporin to help the healing along. I would say that my scar has faded very nicely (it has been 15 mos. since my port was placed.)

Good luck!
