Pain In Lower Right back/side

Yesterday I was coughing, nothing hard at all and felt this large POP in my lower right side sort of on the back. I couldnt breathe in deep, cough or move without severe pain. I went straight to the ER, they did xrays but saw nothing. They sent me home saying that it was a bruised rib and maybe a torn tendon or muscle. The thing is I had been having some pain in that area for the past 2 weeks. I thought maybe it was gallstones, or then an infection when I coughed up blood, but I went into the hospital last week and started on ivs. Im really confused and have no idea why I would have this pain and then yesterday this large pop feeling in that area. I am pretty much confined to the couch and cant move. Any ides?

You could have popped a rib out of place. That's happened to me before and its extremely painfull. You might think about going to a chiropractor.

I actually thought the SAME EXACT thing as Jessi. I had this happen Dec 2006 and can honestly say it was one of the most painful things I have ever felt. I would maybe talk to your doc and see if he can get you a script for massage therapy for muscle spasms and severe/chronic pain caused by coughing from CF. I know it seems a bit silly but if he writes the script that way it should be covered by insurance.

I would then find a therapy center with a massage therapist and make an appointment. I ended up doing this in January because I had exhausted other efforts - with NO luck and NO pain relief. Within 5 minutes the massage therapist had pinpointed the problem and my pain was 95% gone.

I will add I had several appointments at a spa type massage place and they weren't able to help me at all. They actually would not even touch the area that hurt. I would definitely opt for a therapy center.

Hope you get some relief as I know THAT is horrendously painful. Also to add I had CT Scans and Xrays done and nothing came back abnormal because there was no break or anything it was just slightly out of place.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Hello there,

I have had that happen to me. I cleared my throat...and pop. It was excruciating. I went to the er where they took xrays which showed nothing. I was sent home. About 2 days later it happened again. This xray showed 2 broken ribs...one which was actually visible on the first xray...but read incorrectly. I then proceeded to break a rib a month for a year....fun times. I then went on fossamax...and it helped. I have been on prednisone for a long time, which weakened my bones. I would suggest to all cfers to take caltrate. It was really a nightmare. It took a toll on my overall health. Hopefully, you have just pulled a muscle. Sorry to go on, but i am basically saying to take calcium supplements and have a yearly bone-density check. I hope you are feeling better soon. I always use a heating pad, which does help a little.
ps...I did have a nagging pain for a couple of weeks before the actual break...the kind of pain that feels like you must lay down immediatley for any relief!!

Take care!
