New carpet

Hello.

We are having our home re-carpeted this weekend and I"m wondering if there is any specific problems you know of with regard to the "new carpet smell" and fumes of glues, etc...? I am actually leaving the house for a couple days in order to not be here when its fresh, but plan on coming back 2 days later and didn't know if you think that's too early or if there are any specific dangers of being here with newly laid carpet? Its also supposed to be in the 70's, so we'll keep our windows open for a few days to vent the house.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or if you think it will be ok for me to come back to the house in 2 days after they lay it? I always get so nervous to do home improvement things as I know dust, etc. all gets kicked up in addition to whatever chemicals they'll use. Urgh....

have you ever been tested for allergies to dust mites?

those live in carpets and can make your CF exponentially worse if you're allergic.

I am allergic to dust, yes... but, my question is mostly whether I need to worry if I LEAVE the house for a couple days when the carpet is fresh? I would think the dust from my old carpet will leave with the old carpet, yes? The new carpet shouldn't really have as much dust in it. I suppose I should deff. stay outside while they're installing it though... or wear a mask, which I do have.

you're not allergic to dust, it's dust mite feces.

and yes, they are in your rug right from when the fabric comes into being.

Are they gluing the carpet down or nailing it down? If it's glue, then I would suggest heading for the hills for a day or two. Also, if you don't already have an air filter/purifier, now is the time to get one.

My personal favorite and the one I always recommend is the Bionaire HEPA tower with optional ionizer.

Here are a few other tips for reducing your exposure to dust mites and the chemicals associated with new carpet installation

1. For the first few months of having the carpet, be sure to vacuum at LEAST once a week. Every couple days is idea

2. Avoid walking around barefoot on the carpet. This will improve the life of the carpet by keeping your body oils from getting on it, and will keep your skin exposure to allergens at a minimum

3. Don't throw your laundry on the floor (clean or dirty). I like to pile my laundry on the floor in front of the TV to fold it, but I make sure to spread out a big blanket first as my workspace. This keeps the dust mites from making their way onto my clothes.

Like I already said, you're wise to get out of there for a couple days until everything calms down. Enjoy the new carpet!

LOL... Kylie... thanks! I am hoping that is the case!

LightNLife... Thanks for the awesome suggestions! I appreciate the tips and will deffinitely keep them in mind. We recently bought a new vaccuum with a HEPA and I try to vacuum once a week anyway... if not more often. But, with the new carpet, I'm going to try to vaccuum 2X a week to keep it nice and reduce allergens from the get-go. The nice thing is that only 1/2 of our house is carpet and the rest is pergo, which really helps keep down the dust.

Thanks.
