Ughh.Aidan has needed a sinus surgery every 8-10 months since he's been 15 months old! We do everything (daily hypertonic sinus rinses, nasal steroids, hospital grade air purifier, all allergy prevention stuff) and here we are again. He can not go longer than 4 weeks without a raging sinus infection and is constantly in pain and on antibiotics. A sinus scope once again showed polyps blocking the right side.

Our CF doc always does IVs before his sinus surgeries to clear some infection before surgery. The PICCS are brutal for him and his left arm is already shot. So I think we are leaning towards a port? Can you do normal blood draws through a port (like Tiger 2 study blood draws?) Aidan is colonized with MRSA and CHOP Infectious Disease doctor told us ports are better for risk of infection?Any helful info??

Megan,

So sorry that Aidan has to have the sinus surgery again! Poor kiddo! I would definitely get the port. Hayley has had hers for a year and a half now and it is one of the best things we ever did! The only think I don't like is that it has to be accessed and flushed every month, but that's a small price to pay for the instant access whenever she is sick. You can draw blood off of the port and they always draw all her blood for any labs from the port, which also makes it easier. Only one poke and you are done. The needles only last for a week while doing IV antibiotics, so during a two week IV course you do have change the needle once, but all it all I would do the port again in a heart beat!

I don't know why it would be any worse than a PICC line for infection purposes. I would think it would be better, because once the port has been surgically placed it's there, where when you do repeated PICC lines, you risk infection every time a new PICC is placed, as well as the PICC line getting pulled out or blowing a vein, ect. They commonly place ports in cancer patients for chemo and they definitely need to avoid infections! So just my two cents on that!

Thanks Becky. I feel like he is on the border with needing one. IVs one time a year isn't horrible but his sinuses just don't ever seem to get better! You're right...His doctor said the port WAS BETTER in terms of less chance of infection. That is also why we are inclined to head that way. Thanks!

Hi Megan. So sorry to hear about your son. My sister has been having similar issues w/ her daughter although she's a little older (8 yrs).
Last time I talked to her she had been to a new doctor who was telling her about a balloon sinuplasty procedure. It was a new one on me but I'm certainly no expert. It sounded promising to her though so when I read your post I thought I'd mention it. Supposed to be less of an ordeal than regular sinus surgery.
All the best,
ADB
