I dont recommend decreasing his enzymes for 2 reasons. The malabsorbtion that could come will not be healthy AND the pain/gas/diahrea that could follow will be just as painful as the constipation.

IMHO & experience you are better off keeping his enzymes as is & trying miralax in higher doses then reducing it as he starts going. It sounds like he might need it as part of his regular routine. Its available over the counter & isnt as harsh as Go Lytely (IMHO) & isnt that bad in taste.

My daughter (no CF) has ALWAYS been prone to bad constipation. As a baby her diapers would be filled with rabbit turds instead of normal baby poop......we were able to get away with using Colace for her.

Good Luck!

We had similar issues with DS when we made the switch to whole milk and he was doing his poo holding thing. It took several weeks to get him adjusted again and we were able to use milk of mag, but it was very traumatic. He'd cry, I'd cry. Had similar issues when we began trying to potty train him, too. He was horrified the first time he used the potty chair -- screamed and we couldn't get him near the thing for MONTHS.

Ditto on NOT decreasing enzymes. You don't want to risk and obstruction. DS's doctor indicated that one's first reaction would be to do so, but CFers can get something called a meconium illeus, in fact DS had this issue when he was about 4 months old. A LOT of stool backed up in the colon, but loose/liquid stools would seep thru the cracks. So it seemed as if he had diarehha, but he was actually constipated.

Thanks ladies. I'll let you know what happens with the GI doc. As for decreasing the enzymes, the nutritionist said a lot of the patients that moved from RI to CT and switched clinics (I guess there are a lot!) always come on very high doses of enzymes. Vinny was at the highest rec. dosage. Since we've been having such troubles with this constipation, she suspects his dosage was way high, and gradually decreased him from 1 creon 10 with snacks and 2 with meals, to 1 creon 5 with a snack and 1 creon 5 and 1 creon 10 with a meal. This puts him more in the middle of the rec. dose of enzymes (she showed us on some chart).

I'm going to the store today and will pick up some Miralax to hold us over til our appt. because just colace or adding fiber to his diet isn't cutting it.

we recently nipped a GI problem in the bud by being aggessive and going to a GI doctor even though our Pulm didn't think our daughter was quite ready to go (but she wasn't against it). She had a parital GI blockage. She put us on a regiment of MuraMax and Emily is good to go now.

We have also started looking at her fiber intake. I didn't think much of that because she has a g-tube and we use forumula with fiber. The GI doc told us the fiber content really wasn't that much so we've had to relook at her daily oral diet.
