Cost of a tx

My fiancee, Claire, had a double lung transplant in July and because we live in the UK, we get health care paid 4. I was just wondering how uch a double lung transpland and a heart lung transplatt would cost respectively.

I was told that in total my double lung transplant was $250,000. Thank goodness for government assistance.

I don't live in the UK, but in the U.S.

My lung tx was 7 years ago and it rang up a nice $986,000

The cost varies depending on how long on vent, how long in ICU, complications etc. and also the time you are in the hospital of course. My sister had her lung tx in 2001, and her tx cost about 175,000.
I think they say the average cost in the U.S. is about $150,000

I think the $150,000 is a conservative number. I thought they were more in the $200,000-250,000 range. Possibly it depends on the hospital too.

Our center wouldn't give a quote (since it varies greatly), but said to figure on $300,000. They won't even start your work up if you can't prove you can pay not only for the workup, surgery, hospital stay, but a plan for the future hospitalizations and medication. We always wonder how our US medical system would change if the government was totally in charge.

Well if the government was in charge things would be like the post office VS Fed Ex. I would have died because of my being TX'ed at 50 and some countries (I have heard Great Britian) cut off around 40 years old. Best nurses I had for the TX were from Canada and had fled the great system up north. Both England and Oz. will not TX cepacia, last I heard. Before Thatcher your country paid around 90% in taxes.

Healthcare in New Zealand is very poor. Last year the plan for a nursing strike was to load kids from the ICU into a 747 and fly to Oz.

Some wonderful governments that provide all your health care like Russia, Cuba and China let you die and have little expertise.

Mickey, I do not believe in a free lunch. How are your total taxes since you "get health care paid 4".

When did Oz start taking cepacia's? In 2002, I know Sydney did not TX cepacia's. I was under the impression from an Aussie (TX with a wife that is a doctor) that he did not know of any cepacias TX'ed in Oz or that had even been listed. This was just prior to my third trip down under in 2003.

Could you list a TX coordinator in Oz from Sydney and a telephone number in country, I hope to visit again in the next year. How many centers in Oz perform Lung TX's?

Personally, I don't think there's ANY good healthcare systems out there. US probably has the best or one of the best in most areas if you rate on technology, quality, and availability; however, for those who don't have insurance, or for those who don't have the $$$$ to pay the copays/deductibles/etc, it's all a moot point. Sure, if you need acute care, a not for profit hospital can't turn you away BUT they can force you into bankrupcy for failure to pay. We have good insurance but by the time we pay copays, deductibles, & coinsurance having children w/chronic health conditions cost us $6000-12,000/yr. Thankfully, for us it just means we drive older cars, don't take vacations, and plan free or cheap family activities but for some, it's a choice between food and medical care.

Of course, that's not to say I'd want the govenment making my healthcare choices. Like CF 54 cepacia said, he'd be dead and I'm sure lots of others of us would be, too. Not to mention the quality of life. Really, there's no good choices.

Ok, just my ramblings, sorry it's a bit off topic I suppose...

My cost are also very high (close to yours) and the paperwork is never ending. Post TX the bills can be very high even with insurance. I have known some to get throught the system (TX) with the government picking up most of the cost.

I feel we have a decent system that is failing, yet others have already failed to offer timely health care. Name one socialized system that treats the number of patients for free that are not citizens of that country? We have foreign nationals that have run up $400,000 in a rural Idaho county, yet are not here legally, never paid any bills or taxes and will never leave our health care system. I would rather see our medical system help citizens such as CF's before we become the dumping ground for the third world.

Oz is also having many issue with their medical system (private and national) with cost and the closing of hospitals in rural areas.

As with prior post, Duke takes many cepacias (no longer accepts type 3). UNC takes all cepacias. Several others may take a few cepacia rarely (Pittsburg and Stanford (5 year old info.). From my experience and knowledge Duke and UNC are the places to try if you or a friend have cepacia. Other centers may talk to you, yet in the end are likely to drop you from the list prior to TX (when you become drug resistent from the IV's prior to TX). Between these two centers, they have the most experience with cepacias and they are within 25 minutes of each other.

Glad to hear Oz is taking cepacias.

Oz has 3 transplant centres, one in melbourne, one in sydney and one in brisbane.
the name of the transplant doctor in sydney is Allen Glenville (pretty sure the spelling is correct) at the St vincents hospital sydney.
ring the hospital and get them to put you through to the tx co-ordinator.

In regards to the cepacia and tx, I have not heard of any that have gone through the actually operation, many have been listed, but to my knowledge none have been done, and unless sydney has changed their policy they didnt take cepacia patients and rarely took MRSA patients under certain circumstances, but as I said sydney is pretty picky on who they will do and who they wont.

I know with friends who have been transplanted with MRSA have had a rough time with post operative infections etc.

I was actually refused listing from sydney when I first went to be listed because I had MRSA, but maybe they have changed the policy since I first seen them.

I had my tx in brisbane 2 years ago.

"Good on you" being 2 years out from Brisbane. Some US centers list and never TX cepacias and it sounds like Oz. does this bait and switch. As I said in a prior post, I have not heard of Cepacia's being done in Oz.
