Arm Port

This question is specifically for people with arm ports. I had one put it a calendar week ago and I'm still in a lot of pain and the site is still swollen and bruised. My surgeon said this is normal. My question is, how long did it take for your arm port to stop hurting after surgery? Having it re-accessed today was unbearably painful.

Not curious about other locations of ports and healing time, I've had them, and am specifically asking about arm ports.

Thanks!

Hey, with my experience my site hurt for about 1 week. It was a little swollen and very uncomfortable during that week. I could'nt move my arm that much and even writing was difficult. If you have eccess swelling that does'nt sound right. I'm sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time. Hope everything works out for you.

My suggestion is to let it heal before having it accessed (may or may not be possible)

I know when I had my chest port in it was accessed straight away and then had to have the needle changed like 3 days later, which in my opinion is barbaric...

When I had my arm port placed I already had a PICC line in my other arm, so I was able to let the site heal before trying to poke it with a needle....

If by memory, I think my site was only tender for a week or so (it's been 8 years)
but it wasn't accessed for a couple of months, so by that time the bruising/swelling was not an issue...

Good luck and I hope your pain so gets better

Thanks, fr3ak... that is the raddest picture of a dog I've seen in a really long time. Is it your Dal?

I agree, it's totally barbaric to have to access the site right after surgery. It was horrible! I had them access it in the OR when I was still under local, and I didn't feel a thing then (well, just pressure, you know) but it was so horrible having it accessed again earlier this week.

Have you had your port now for 8 years? If so, that's awesome! I've had ports for the last twelve years and I'm on port number three. I guess six years for the first and close to six for the second is pretty good. Congrats on 8!!

Hey Rotandroll,

yeah that's my boy wrinkles, and he knows he's gorgeous!! LOL

ya my arm port has been going strong now for 8 years, my chest port didnt even last a full year!

I know its a pain in the butt but is there any way they can put a PICC in your other arm to allow your freshly slaughtered arm a chance to heal?
