How long did you try before doing IUI/IVF?

Hi all,

My husband and I are TTC. About two years ago, we tried for 4-5 mos, then I hit a rough patch healthwise. Now, we are trying again <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> I suppose I anticipate needing help conceiving and was wondering how long those of you who are going through/went through fertility treatments tried 'the old fashion way. I don't want to wait years and years. I'm not getting any younger <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

We tried for 3 years. The last 6 months of that I was charting my cycle and everything appeared to be normal. I talked with my doctor and she referred me to a fertility clinic. After our 5th IUI we were pregnant. Our baby girl is almost 2 now. We just went back for our second child and it only took 1 IUI attempt. We're almost 5 months pregnant right now.

If you're ready to have a baby now, I'd encourage you to move forward and get additional help. I can vividly remember how frustrating and painful those years before we were pregnant.

Thanks for sharing your story. I will probably give it six months of trying before seeing a fertility specialist. I will be 29 in July and wouldn't want to be much past 30 having a baby.

I think your 6 month plan is a reasonable one. (I know, I've also always had this "no pregnancy past 30" thing in my head as well. Not sure if I'll stick to that or not, but I totally relate to you.)
To be clear, I did not have IUI or IVF. I'm on my 2nd pregnancy right now and its been 4 yrs since my first one. For some reason, I also anticipated problems conceiving the 2nd time around. Not sure why, I guess I always felt that for me to just have the first one was such a miracle, it couldn't possible be easy the 2nd time!
The first time I got preg on my 2nd month trying. This time, it took a whole year. At the 11 month point I made my first appt with the fert clinic. I began the process of finding out what was wrong and possibly going the IUI route. We continued trying during all my testing (I did an ultrasound, vaginal scope ultrasound and bloodwork). Ironically I got pregnant the 12th month of ttc.
So, not saying that happens all the time, or will happen to you. I guess my point is to not be surprised if it takes a while to conceive.
I think my mental outlook had a lot to do with it too. I was so convinced that I wouldn't get pregnant I think it caused alot of emotional anguish, which definitely affects your body. Also, during that year of ttc there were months where I wasn't in the best physical shape and I think the body will prevent you from conceiving if you aren't in good health.
I wish I had left it all to whatever will be will be, and embraced the possibility of needing fert help-I probably would have gotten pregnant faster, or at least enjoyed the year of ttc and not been so stressed and sad the whole time.

We tried for 8 months before starting IUI. We did two unmedicated IUIs and did not get pregnant, so then we added clomid to the IUI cycle and I got pregnant but miscarried. Then we did another clomid + IUI and got pregnant with my now 9 month old daughter.

My OB told me that CF "may or may not" affect fertility, which is what I've observed on this board as well. She told me that, if I were in my 20s, she would have had me wait a year before seeing a fertility specialist, but, if I were over 35, she would have had me go at six months. Because I was 32 at the time, she said I could go anytime after six months. However, I don't think she was taking the health aspects of CF into account - just maternal age. I think, in general, six months is a good waiting period for someone with CF. We aren't only racing the biological clock, we are racing the "health clock" as far as when our bodies are best equipped to handle pregnancy.
