Chronic Headaches and Sinus Problems

Back in June, I started getting headaches everyday. Shortly after, I was diagnosed with a sinus infection. I tried 5 different antibiotics, nasal rinses, steriods, accupuncture, massage, physical therapy, all kinds of things, but the headaches were persistant. Finally, in November I had sinus surgery. Three weeks after surgery, the headaches were gone.

About 7 weeks after surgery, I got a cold, which turned into a sinus infection. Shortly after, the headaches came back. It is the same headache I had prior to the surgery. I am confident there is a direct relation to my sinus problems and the headaches. I have been on antibiotics for the infection for three weeks, but the headaches are still a problem. I also do nasal rinses twice a day, flonase, and a spray with antiboitics in it. I'm guessing that the mucous is just stuck in there due to having CF and that is causing the headaches. I worried surgery will be the only solution to this, based on my previous experience. I can't expect to have surgery everytime I get a sinus infection.

I'm looking for others who get daily headaches. Are your headaches related to the condition of your sinuses? What works for pain management? Any hope the headaches will go away without surgery? What has been your experience with this?

I'd have another sinus CT to see what kind of shape your sinuses are in. Without knowing what they did during your first surgery it's hard to guess at the cause. It could be that they were not as aggressive as they could have been with the 1st procedure, perhaps trying to save you some pain or recovery time. Again that's just speculation on my part. If I were you I would call your ENT surgeon and ask what was done during the 1st surgery and then describe the current problems. I think a repeat exam and CT are well within reason.

Another avenue I would pursue is getting a nasal culture. Fungi often colonize the sinuses and can cause swelling and pain and do not respond to antibiotics. Although they should have had cultures done at the time of your surgery, ask for a nasal culture.

Good luck with everything

I am so SORRY you are having to deal with this!! I am having some of the same trouble myself. I had surgery a couple of years ago and have recently started having headaches. Went to the ENT this past Tues. and I have a sinus infection that he had to culture. I am with you that we CAN NOT have surgery be our only option.

It is strange for me though.....my headaches start right after I eat in the morning, I take tylenol and then it goes away afer an hour or so, then it returns when I eat breakfast the next day. Weird!!

I have started a new nasal rinse and I would be happy to share it with you. I will PM you.

Yeah I've had 6 surgery's and my head still hurts. It will be better till I get a cold or some other infection. Dr's have given me just about every pain killer (norco/dioloded) but I don't like the side effects, I cant poop, and want more, so I eat pot browies now. It works, or lets me deal with the pain and go to sleep. My doc knows about it and is ok with it, he likes it better than the other pain killers.
