my son is eight and in the last three weeks he has (gone over) on
his ankle three times .his ankle swells quite badly for a couple of
days then subsides. this seems excessive to me. i was
wondering if cf could cause weak bones due to lack of
nutrients caused by cf. what do you think?

I was always told that my bones developed slower and my body developed slower because of my CF. I could only come to the conclusion that it would be the lack of nutrients. I could be his vitamin D is too low and that could be why his bones are weak. My vitamin D is extremly low and the Doctor is alway concerned about it because when it is too low they tell me your bones can break much easier. If it concerns you that much, you might want to talk to your sons Doctor about it.

Hi there,

CF can cause osteoporosis (weakening of the bones) although your
son does seem young to have it. I think the
osteoporosis may be contributed to by a chronic lack of
Vitamin D (which is a fat soluble vitamin and given that many
people with CF have major troubles absorbing fat, unfortunately as
a result we often are low on our fat soluble vitamins, the others
are vitamin A, E and K). Vitamin D plays a major role with the
absorption of calcium and phosphorus which are all needed for
strong bones.
There are vitamin preparations available for people with CF
that provide all the fat soluble vitamins in a water soluble
format. Hope that helps.

Chances are good that he is in need of supplements if he isnt already taking them. IN addition to a CFer not absorbing Vitamin ADEK, the meds (or some not all) deplete our system of important nutrients. We are always at risk. The older we get the worse it gets, but in general, we are always there! Let us know what the doc says!
