Well for me the tegaderm bothers me also. It itches and it gets really red and puffy. Even after my IV is out it stays that way for a bit. What do they use on your IV to clean it? They used to use betadine and alcohol on mine then they switched to something called chloraprep. It is horrible. It literally melts the tegaderm to your skin. Usually skin comes off when they change my fressing. I hate it but I guess for some reason they say it's cleaner using the new stuff.

my daughter has allergy to tape also. It is always a problem when she has to have any form of tape on her skin, even bandaids effect her. I know how you feel it is a weird allergy.

Speaking of tape, did any of you guys ever use to play with that real cool gummi johnson and johnson tape in the hospital? When i was much younger, everytime a different nurse came in the room (boatloads of them) i'd ask them if I could have their gummi tape. 98% of the time they would offer it up. I collected an amazing amount of that gummi tape, and at the end of my normal 2 week admission I had made a GIANT ball of gummi pure, very round, and pretty smooth gummi tape. The stuff was amazing, it must have weighed atleast 10 lbs, and bounced pretty good. Some shmuck eventually stole it from my house, but for some weird reason it was my pride and joy for a long time. Even if you are older and more mature, I recommend ganking any and all johnson and johnson gummi tape you can get your hands on (every nurse has atleast one roll, especially RT's and IV/blood technicians), and make a giant roll of gummi tape while admitted. It is extremely calming, and rewarding to make a real big one.

I have had severe reactions to all adhesives when on IVs. Didnt matter what they cleaned it with, put under it or what type of adhesive they use I would break out, be sore & raw & itch like hell. I had to start having the dressing changed daily just to get some relief during the cleaning of the area. When I got home on ivs the home health agency didnt want to do the daily thing, but I couldnt go for more than 2 days. I tried & finally blew my cork! Once in a great while I have it with a bandaid, but since I dont use them at home much I dont know if its a constant problem.

My daughter is extremely allergic to tape/tegaderm/etc. Whenever she has an IV they put this white stretchy cloth (has little holes in it for air) over her IV site. Sorry that I can't think of the name for it right now - but, I will try to find out what it is. It is not Kerlex - it is actually cloth and very soft. It comes in rolls and they just cut it to fit the area.

I call it cheese cloth, but I dont know if thats the medical term for it. Its like what my mom use to use to put clams in for steaming. Not a good comparison I know, but I use that to protect the site a bit. Doesnt help with the adhesive that HAS to be on to keep bacteria away tho

I too react to tape...even get blisters from it. That's what makes accessing my porta cath a problem, the huge piece of tegaderm that is attatched to my skin. I pick at it until they have no choice but to remove it and put a new one on. When I used to have IV's, I would also blister under the tegaderm....used paper tape, better but not perfect. Falls off the skin easily. My immune system hates anything foreign, including antibiotics. I am allergic to about 8 of them, so I guess I have an "allergic" personality LOL! If anyone out there has a good solution, let me know...I would be very interested in avoiding geting those blisters! Jenn

Well, my son who will be 5 in 2 weeks , he blisters bad with tegaderm tape we use ensure it tape, it is alittle better but he still gets really red.
We have to put steroid cream on his skin after iv meds. We have not found anything to work just yet. His skin will actually blister and when they remove the tape from his port it will peel his skin and make him raw. He screams. We use trimicolone cream after to help heal him up. He will keep itching and itching. Let me know if you find anything that helps.

Funny that I came across this because I thought it was just me. I am so allergic to Tagaderm and Hypafix(spelling might be off). I get welts, and dark purple marks and it itches like ^%^&! Now they just put gauze and use paper tape. It helps but still irritates a little. BUT not as much as the other stuff. Wow I can not believe this happens to other people I thought it was just my crazeeeee self!

I thought I was allergic to antibiotic ointment or aquaphor -- turns out it's the adhesive. I get a red blistery rash where the adhesive/bandaid sits on my skin. I never had this problem when I was little -- I ALWAYS had a bandaid on my skinned up knees. Wonder if it's new adhesive they use with NON-Latex bandages 'cuz if I use DS's Spongebob Bandaids that have latex in them -- I don't have as much of a problem.

My twin boys are highly allergic to any type of tape/ band aids. When using mid lines they now have to bandage up the the arm. They blister so bad when using tape.

I do not get blisters, but have a mild tape/adhesive allergy. My skin itches horribly and the area under and around any tegaderm/dressing turns red and stays that way. I usually have raw skin where the tegaderm was and it itches for a week or so after I am off of IV antibiotcs and the IV is removed. I haven't found anything to ease the itching during the IV treatment, but I know it eases the removal of the tegaderm if I have the nurses use alcohol pads to wipe away the adhesive. They always try to use some stuff that dissolves the adhesive, but for whatever reason the adhesive just seems to ball up and stick to my skin even worse. Afterwards I try to use a mild lotion around the raw areas too.
Good luck finding a way to ease the itching, do post if you find anything

I'm also ridiculously allergic to the tape. I don't use Tegaderm anymore. I use a more skin-friendly kind called Sorbiview. It still irritates my skin, but not as much as the Tegaderm did. I hate that stuff.
